Agri-Spouse Friday - Week 29, Week 30 and Week 31!

Welcome back to our Agri-Spouse Friday Quilt Along. Today is a LONG post so settle in and get ready for some pleasant viewing and instructions for a bunch of blocks but at least we end up all caught up to where I wanted to be at this point.

Last week was pretty busy for me. Rhylee had a competition on Saturday and then Quinn was home on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On top of that, it was Teacher's Convention so the kids were home on Thursday and Friday. Yeah, I didn't get any blocks sewn up last week. I did pretty well this week though. I finished seven blocks this week and finally got us all caught up again. That makes me so happy and I feel so much more relaxed about getting next week's sewing and post done.

We will start with the photos that have been sent to me. There has been lots of catching up by everyone else! I know that Marion and Suzanne have plans for the next bit that will preclude them getting much sewing done but they will catch up too.

I am looking forward to seeing their Corn and Beans and finding out if the more experienced quilters did it my way or if they managed to put it together without the extra seams.

We will start with the blocks from Mom. First we have Box:

And then we have Flock:

Suzanne sent some block photos as well. First we have Birds in the Air:

And Hovering Hawks:

Then Jackknife:

Ribbons:

Storm Signal:

And last, but not least, Tulip:

Marion sent a bunch of blocks too! First we will show Marion's Tulip:

Then her Bowtie:

Swallow:

Strawberry Basket:

Temperance Tree:

Friendship:

And Friendship Block:

I love them all. When Suzanne sent the photo of her Strawberry Basket, I noticed that there was a slight difference between hers and mine. It was the colour of the very centre 1" block. First I compared mine against what I had on EQ. Well, I sewed what I had on EQ. I thought about it for a little while longer though and went back to the book. Way back when I did all the planning it turns out that I made the mistake then. At the very least Suzanne, and as it turns out Marion caught my mistake and did their blocks correctly! I am happy that they both got it right, even if I didn't.

I would like to say that I has a sense of humour with my planning since the last block for last week was End of Day and the next block is Morning and the block after that is Noon and Night. Yeah, I wish I could say that it was a sense of humour or irony or something but it wasn't anything like that in reality. I just organized them based on things getting slightly more difficult at a time and "like blocks" together based on piecing and I fluked out with these three coming together like this but it makes me laugh.

The Morning block is another one that I have done slightly different than the book but this way I didn't have to deal with trying to piece together triangles on the bias where I couldn't trim very easily so I broke the centre triangle and made flying geese instead. The end result is basically the same except for the extra seam in the centre of the centre triangle but it was so much easier to get everything nice and neat with pretty good points so I am happy.

I am also happy that I ended up doing the last block of week 29 and the first block of week 30 right after the other because that is how I realized just how close the two blocks are.
Do you remember way back when we did Churn Dash and Wrench one week and how they were the same block except for slight changes in colours? Well, Morning and Weathervane are the same like that. They are the same block with a slight colour variation.

With that we will get started with the blocks for week 29 and we will finish with the two blocks for week 31.

The first block for week 29 is Block #100 - Noon and Night.

Cut one 2 5/8" x 2 5/8" pink square.
Cut two 4 3/4" x 1 1/2" brown rectangles.
Cut two 2 5/8" x 1 1/2" brown rectangles.
Cut four 2" x 2" pink squares.
Cut two 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" pink squares.
Cut two 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" raspberry squares.

Place one of the 2 3/4" pink squares RST with one of the 2 3/4" raspberry squares and make it into HSTs. Repeat for the other two 2 3/4" squares.

Place the small brown rectangles RST with the edge of the remaining pink square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat with the other small rectangle on the other side of the pink square.

Place the longer brown rectangles RST on the other sides of the pink square, sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

Place your ruler perpendicular to the stitch line on your HSTs and cut them in half on the diagonal.

Organize your pieces the way you want them to look.

Place the right angle corner of one of the triangles RST with the corner of a pink square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other three squares.

Place the right angle corner of another of the triangles RST with the corner of a pink square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other three squares. You should now have four triangles for the corners like the photo to the left.

Now place one of the triangles RST with the brown edge of your square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat with another triangle on the opposite side of your square. Place another triangle RST on a remaining brown edge of your square and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam, press to one side and your first block for week 29 is finished!

The second block for week 29 is Block #57 - Morning.

Cut eight 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" yellow rectangles.
Cut twelve 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" blue squares.
Cut eight 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" red squares.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" yellow squares.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" red rectangles.
Cut one 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" red square.

I organized the pieces like the picture above. The innermost nine pieces will go together like any of the other nine patches that we have put together.

Next take one of the yellow rectangles and place a blue square on one end. Draw a line diagonally across the blue square and sew directly on the line. Do three more rectangles in the same manner and do the four other yellow rectangles with the blue squares on the other end. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side.

Now place the red square on the other end of the yellow rectangle and draw a line on the diagonal and sew directly on the line. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other seven yellow rectangles. You should now have eight flying geese with yellow centres, four with red on one end and blue on the other and four with the red/blue orientation opposite.

Sew together the top strip of four pieces and the bottom strip of four pieces. Sew together the two side flying geese and the other two side flying geese.

Sew the side flying geese onto the centre nine patch.

Lastly, sew the top strip and the bottom strip onto the centre piece and the first block for this week is finished!

Our first block for week 30 is Block #100 - Weathervane.

Cut eight 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" orange rectangles.
Cut twelve 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" brown squares.
Cut eight 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" purple squares.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" orange squares.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" purple rectangles.
Cut one 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" brown square.

I organized the pieces like the picture above. The innermost nine pieces will go together like any of the other nine patches that we have put together.

Next take one of the orange rectangles and place a purple square on one end. Draw a line diagonally across the brown square and sew directly on the line. Do three more rectangles in the same manner and do the four other orange rectangles with the purple squares on the other end. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side.

Now place the brown square on the other end of the orange rectangle and draw a line on the diagonal and sew directly on the line. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other seven orange rectangles. You should now have eight flying geese with orange centres, four with brown on one end and purple on the other and four with the brown/purple orientation opposite.

Sew together the top strip of four pieces and the bottom strip of four pieces. Sew together the two side flying geese and the other two side flying geese.

Sew the side flying geese onto the centre nine patch.

Lastly, sew the top strip and the bottom strip onto the centre piece and the first block for this week 30 is finished!

Our second block for week 30 is Block #99 - W.C.T.U.

Cut two 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" green squares. Cut these on the diagonal.
Cut four 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" red squares.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" yellow squares.
Cut two 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" yellow squares.
Cut two 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" green squares.
Cut one 2 3/8" x 2 3/8" yellow square. Cut this on the diagonal.
Cut one 1 1/4" x 4" green rectangle.

Place each of the 2 1/4" yellow square RST with one of the 2 1/4" green squares and make them into HSTs. Place your ruler perpendicular to your stitch line and cut your HSTs in half on the diagonal.

Find the centre of the green rectangle and the yellow triangles. I did this by folding them in half and finger pressing. Place the green rectangle RST with the yellow triangle, making sure to centre the two pieces on each other. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Place the other yellow triangle, centred on the opposite side of the green rectangle. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Trim this piece to 2 1/2" square. Organize your pieces the way you want them to look.

Place the right angle corner of one of the yellow/green triangles RST with the corner of a yellow square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other three yellow squares.

Place the right angle corner of another of the triangles RST with the corner of the yellow square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other three squares. You should now have four triangles for the corners like the photo to the left.

Place your yellow/green triangles RST with your green triangle. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

You have a basic nine patch to put together now.

With this you have finished the second block for week 30!

Our third block for week 30 is Block #104 - Wild Geese.

Cut one 3 3/8" x 3 3/8" blue square.
Cut one 3 3/8" x 3 3/8" green square.
Cut four 2" x 2" pink squares.
Cut one 3" x 3" orange square. Cut this on the diagonal.
Cut one 3" x 3" brown square. Cut this on the diagonal.
Cut four 2" x 3 1/3" pink rectangle.
Cut four 2" x 2" green squares.
Cut four 2" x 2" blue squares.
Cut two 2" x 2" blue squares. Cut these on the diagonal.
Cut two 2" x 2" green squares. Cut these on the diagonal.

Place the large blue square and the large green square RST and make it into HSTs. Place your ruler perpendicular to your stitch line and cut your HSTs in half on the diagonal. Place your cut triangles RST with another triangle so that the colours alternate. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. I also sewed the other two triangles together and sewed up the other QST. Maybe it will be of use later.

Next take one of the pink rectangles and place a green square on one end. Draw a line diagonally across the green square and sew directly on the line. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side. Do one more rectangle in the same manner. Now place the green square on the other end of the pink rectangle and draw a line on the diagonal and sew directly on the line. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other pink rectangle.

Next take one of the two remaining pink rectangles and place a blue square on one end. Draw a line diagonally across the blue square and sew directly on the line. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side. Do the last rectangle in the same manner. Now place the blue square on the other end of the pink rectangle and draw a line on the diagonal and sew directly on the line. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other pink rectangle.

You should now have two green/pink flying geese and two blue/pink flying geese.

Centre one small green triangle RST along the edge of one pink square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for one other pink square and green triangle.

Centre one small blue triangle RST along the edge of one pink square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for one other pink square and blue triangle.

Centre another green triangle RST along the edge of the pink square after a 1/4" turn. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for one other pink square and green triangle.

Centre another blue triangle RST along the edge of the pink square after a 1/4" turn. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for one other pink square and blue triangle.

Organize your pieces the way you want them to look.

Trim each of your four flying geese to 2 5/8" x 1 1/2".

Place the pink/blue flying goose RST with the pink square with blue triangles. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other pink/blue flying goose. Next Place the pink/green flying goose RST with the pink square with green triangles. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other pink/green flying goose.

If you look at it you will see that you kind of have a nine patch to put together now.

Once you have your diagonal nine patch sewn together, your third block for week 30 is finished! I didn't think to take a picture of this block after I trimmed it I trimmed the edges of the the triangles off, bringing the whole block down to 6 1/2" square.

Our first block for week 31 is Block #85 - Square Dance.

Cut one 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" pink square.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" brown squares.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" pink rectangles.
Cut eight 1 1/2" x 3" blue rectangles.

The side pink/blue pieces are essentially long flying geese. Place one blue rectangle RST with a pink rectangle, at right angles to each other. Draw a line diagonally across the corner the blue rectangle as if it was just a square as in usual flying geese. Sew directly on the line. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other three pink rectangles.

Place a blue rectangle on the other end of the pink rectangleDraw a line diagonally across the corner the blue rectangle as if it was just a square as in usual flying geese. Sew directly on the line. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other three pink rectangles.

Trim your "extended" flying geese to 4 1/2" long.

Now you essentially have a nine patch to put together again.

Once your nine patch is all sewn together, the first block for week 31 is finished.

The last block for week 31 is Block #86 - Squash Blossom.

Cut two 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" yellow rectangles.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 4 1/4" brown rectangles.

Cut two 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" blue rectangles.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 4 1/4" yellow rectangles.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 3" brown rectangles.

Cut two 1 1/2" x 4 1/4" yellow rectangles.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 3" brown rectangles.

Take the two 2 1/2" yellow rectangles and make "extended" flying geese with the 4 1/4" brown rectangles with the yellow the centre.

Take the two 4 1/4" yellow rectangles and make "extended" flying geese with the 3" brown rectangles with the yellow the centre.

Take the blue rectangles and make "extended" flying geese with the 4 1/4" yellow rectangles with the blue the centre.

Trim the yellow/blue flying goose so that it is still a rectangle but there is two inches of yellow on each side of the wide part of the blue triangle. Now place the last brown rectangles RST on the ends of the yellow/blue rectangle. Draw a line diagonally across the corner the brown rectangle as if it was just a square as in usual flying geese. Sew directly on the line. Cut off the corner triangle 1/4" from your stitch line, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other three brown rectangles. Watch the orientation of the angles so that they go the same way as the angles on the blue triangles to the side of the brown squares.

Trim each of your rectangles to 1 1/2" x 6 1/2".

Sew the strips together in pairs.

Lastly, sew the first pair onto the second pair and then sew the third pair on and the second block for week 31 is finished!

That is finally it for this week's post! Seven blocks complete and we are finally back to where we would have been had I not gotten behind in January. Next week I only have two blocks planned and since we are back on track, that's all I should be posting again.

Have fun and I'll see you next week!
