Agri-Spouse Friday - Week 38

Welcome back to our Agri-Spouse Quilt Along.

The blocks photos you sent me are actually in the next post since I actually have that one written but only in finishing the foundation piecing posts did I realize that I almost forgot these five blocks. Somehow I thought that I had posted all of this type of block and I didn't want to fiddle around with the next, already finished but not published post. Anyway, watch very soon for that post since it is actually finished. I just decided that I wanted all of this type of block together and then we will do the other types of blocks together.

So with that, the last five basic pieced blocks!

Our first block this week is Block #32 - Farmer's Daughter.

Cut one 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" blue square.
Cut four 1 1/2" x 1 3/4" grey rectangles.

Organize your pieces the way you want them to look.

Sew together pairs so that they look like the right.

Place one 2 1/4" green square RST with a 2 1/4" grey square. Make them into HSTs. Trim the HSTs to 1 3/4" x 1 3/4". Repeat with another green/grey pair. Then repeat with four blue/grey pairs.

Place one small blue square RST on the end of one grey rectangle. Draw a line on the diagonal and sew directly on the line. Trim 1/4" from your stitch line and press the seam to one side. Repeat with the other small blue square and grey rectangle. Watch your orientation for these, I had to completely recut and redo one because they both ended up the same direction.

Organize your pieces the way you want them to look. There will be an extra green/grey HST and an extra large blue/grey HST to set aside for something else.

Sew together the small pieces in pairs so that they look like the right.

Place two pairs RST, sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat to end up with three four patches.

Place the small grey square RST with the long grey rectangle. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

The three four patches and the large HST make a standard four patch to put together.

Place the short blue/grey rectangle RST with the four patch you pieced. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Then place the large grey/blue rectangle RST with the pieced rectangle. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Your fourth block for this week is complete.

Place the short side of one small green triangle RST on the end of one grey rectangles so that the right angles match. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam an press to one side. Repeat with the other green triangle and pink rectangle. Watch your orientation of the triangles.

Organize your pieces the way you want them to look. There will be an extra pink/purple HST and an extra large pink/green HST to set aside for something else.

Sew together the small pieces in pairs so that they look like the right.

Place two pairs RST, sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat to end up with three four patches.

Place one four patch and the large pink/green HST RST, sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

Place the the large pieced rectangles RST, sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

Place one pink/green piece RST with the pieced square, lining up the pink only end of the piece with the corner of the pieced square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

Then place the other pink/green piece RST with the pieced square, again lining up the pink only end of the piece with the corner of the pieced square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

Lastly, centre the long side of the pink triangle RST with the larger piece. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side and our fifth block for this week is complete!

That is actually the last basic pieced block. The next two post will be very large with the fifteen blocks I did with basic foundation piecing divided between the two posts. Then there will be a post with the two applique blocks. Lastly, the dreaded "Y" seams!

Have fun!

Agri-Spouse Friday - Week 4

Welcome back to our Agri-Spouse Quilt Along.

As usual, I will start with the photos that I have received from last week's blocks. I only have Marian's blocks so we will start with her Spool Block:

Then we did the Friendship Star block:

Last, we did up the Contrary Wife block:

Lovely!

I can't believe that summer is almost over. Both kids have had a great and busy summer with some camping time, a week with Nana, a variety of daycamps and bunches of downtime to just relax. There has been Tae Kwon Do camp, swim lesson camps, art camp, cooking camp and bike camp between the two kids. Rhylee grew enough to require a new bike and got good enough at biking that we took him to get a new bike. Turns out that he went from needing a child bike to needing a "young adult" bike. He ended up needing a 14.5" frame. MY bike frame is only 16"! We have a tall leggy little man.

Brianna is getting to be such a big girl too. She lost her first two teeth almost a year ago. They were the bottom two centre teeth. She just lost her first top centre tooth, the second one is loose and there is another "wiggler" on the bottom. She is a leggy girl too and all smiles - even if they are a bit goofy!

In a week and a half Brianna will turn seven and on the same day she will start grade TWO. Rhylee will start grade FIVE on the same day. How on earth did so much time pass that we have an almost seven year old entering grade two and a nine and a half year old entering grade five? Our kids are getting so big and they make us so happy.

All right, enough of the mushy stuff and on to the actual quilting part. This week we will sew up two blocks but if you did up last weeks blocks then you shouldn't have any problems with this week's blocks since they are essentially the same blocks. Different colours, different orientation but otherwise things really are pretty much the same.

Our first block this week will be Block #81 - Snowball.

Cut two 3" by 3" yellow squares and two 3" by 3" purple squares.
Cut one 2 1/2" yellow squares and four 2 1/2" by 2 1/2" purple squares.

Place one 3" yellow square RST with one 3" purple square. Pin on the diagonal. Draw a line diagonally on the wrong side of the lighter fabric. Sew a seam 1/4" from the line you have just drawn an then sew a seam on the other side of the line you drew. Then place your ruler along the line you drew and slice the two HSTs apart. Set the seam and press to one side. Place the other 3" yellow square RST with the remaining purple 3" square and repeat the HST process. Trim your HSTs to 2 1/2" squares. You should now have four purple/yellow HSTs that measure 2 1/2", one yellow 2 1/2" square and four purple 2 1/2" squares. Get your pieces organized RSU the way you want them to look.

Flip square 2 RST onto square 3 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 3. Flip square 5 RST onto square 6 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 5. Flip square 8 RST onto square 9 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 9. Flip square 1 RST onto square 4 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 4.

Now flip square 7 RST onto square 4 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 4. Flip the 2/3 set RST onto the 5/6 set, nest the seams neatly and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward the 2/3 set. Flip the 8/9 set RST onto the 5/6 set, nest the seams nearly and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward the 8/9 set. Flip the 1/4/7 set RST on the 2/5/8 piece, nest eh seams neatly and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press to one side and the first block is finished.

Our second block this week will be Block #16 - Calico Puzzle.

Cut two 3" by 3" pink squares and two 3" by 3" blue squares.
Cut one 2 1/2" pink square and four 2 1/2" by 2 1/2" grey squares.

Place one 3" pink square RST with one 3" blue square. Place the other 3" pink square RST with the remaining blue 3" square and repeat the HST process. Trim your HSTs to 2 1/2" squares. You should now have four pink/blue HSTs that measure 2 1/2", one pink 2 1/2" square and four grey 2 1/2" squares.

Flip the 1/4/7 set RST on the 2/5/8 piece, nest the seams neatly and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press to one side.

That's our second block finished and we are done for this week! Next week will again be very similar but there will be some slight variations that will make the blocks different than the last couple of weeks!

Have fun and I'll see you next week.
