Agri-Spouse Friday - Week 41

Welcome back to our Agri-Spouse Quilt Along.

This week - Applique!

There are two blocks that have applique and they are both basket blocks. I used machine piecing to do both of my handles.

Our first block this week is Block #35 - Flower Basket.

Cut one 5" x 5" light blue square.
Cut one 5" x 5" purple square.
Cut one 3" x 3" dark blue square.
Cut one 3" x 3" purple square.
Cut three 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" purple squares.
Print piece #105 from the CD or draw your own handle.

Place the large purple square and the large light blue square RST and make them into HSTs. Trim the HST to 4 1/2" x 4 1/2". The other HST is extra.

Place the 3" purple square and the 3" dark blue square RST and make them into HSTs. Trim the HST to 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".

Place one HST RST a purple square. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Then place a purple square on the other side of the HST. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

Then place the last HST and the last purple RST, sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Take this and place it RST with the purple/blue HST. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

Place the small rectangle RST with the larger rectangle. sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

I chose to machine applique the handle on so I cut out the #105 machine applique piece. I then UHU glued the pattern to the back of a piece of dark blue fabric and then cut the fabric to the pattern. After that I UHU glued the dark blue fabric handle to the block pieced earlier.

I then zigzagged around the handle piece with a short and tight zigzag stitch and the first applique block is finished! (I forgot to take a picture of the two applique blocks after I did the applique and before I stitched all the blocks together but the photos still work.

Our second applique block this week is Block #3 - Basket.

Cut one 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" pink square.
Cut two 2" x 3 1/2" brown rectangles.
Cut one 2" x 2" pink square.
Cut two 2" x 3 1/2" pink rectangles.
Cut one 2 3/8" x 2 3/8" brown square. Cut this on the diagonal.
Cut one 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" pink square. Cut this on the diagonal.
Cut two 2" x 2" pink squares.

Place one small pink square RST on the end of one brown rectangle. Draw a line on the diagonal of the pink square and stitch directly on the line. Trim 1/4" from your stitch line and press to one side. Repeat with the other pink square and brown rectangle.

Place one brown triangle RST with the small pink square so that the right angles match. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat with the other brown triangle on the next side of the pink square.

Place the pink rectangle RST with the brown/pink rectangle. Sew a 1/4", set the seam and press to one side. Repeat with the pink rectangle and the brown/pink rectangle.

Place the long side of the pink triangle RST with the long side of the brown/pink pieced triangle. Sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

You now have a basic four patch to put together.

I chose to machine applique the handle on so I cut out the #10 machine applique piece. I then UHU glued the pattern to the back of a piece of dark blue fabric and then cut the fabric to the pattern. After that I UHU glued the dark blue fabric handle to the block pieced earlier.

I then zigzagged around the handle piece with a short and tight zigzag stitch and the second applique block is finished!

That makes 109 blocks that we have completed and next time we will complete the two blocks with "Y" seams which I have already pieced and they were not nearly as bad as I thought they would be!

Have fun.

Tara.
