Agri-Spouse Friday - Week 11

Welcome back to our Agri-Spouse Quilt Along.

Last weekend was Canadian Thanksgiving. Our Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October and while our Thanksgiving is officially on Monday, no one I know actually does the meal on Monday. Who wants to do a big meal with all of the work and all of the clean up afterwards and then have to go to work the next day? Not me, that's for sure! That's why most of the people I know do their celebration on Sunday instead.

I've been having technical difficulties and couldn't get this to post at all last week. Hopefully this will work.

I am going to start with my little man. He is on the competition team of the Tae Kwon Do place we go to. I think it is called a Dojang but I am not a martial artist kind of girl. My two kids love it though so I am doing what I can to learn about it. Tae Kwon Do is from Korea and his team uniform arrived just in time for his first competition tomorrow. I think it is called a Dobuck or something like that.

Apparently he just isn't into smiling for photos at the moment even if he is excited for tomorrow. We expect him to get whomped tomorrow but we sure are proud of him for trying anyway!
For photos this week we will start with the older photos. We'll start with Suzanne's Whirlpool.

And we have Suzanne's Old Windmill:

From the last post's blocks we will start with Suzanne's Whirlwind:

And Marian's Whirlwind:

And then we have Suzanne's Flock:

And Marian's Flock:

Mom showed me that she had her sewing room set up so she is ready to get going. With any luck we will have some photos from her soon. I am loving doing this quilt along. All of these blocks are so wonderful and it is so exciting to me to so how different the blocks look. While my blocks may shimmer, all of the other blocks glow too!

With that, we will start off with our newest blocks. First up this week will be Block #9 - Box.

Cut four orange 3" x 3" squares.
Cut four purple 3" x 3" squares.
Cut one 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.

Place one 3" purple square RST with one 3" orange square. Pin on the diagonal. Draw a line diagonally on the wrong side of the lighter fabric. Sew a seam 1/4" from the line you have just drawn and then sew a 1/4" seam on the other side of the line you drew. Then place your ruler along the line you drew and slice the two HSTs apart Set the seam and press to one side. Repeat the process with the remaining three purple/orange
3" squares to make all of the squares into HSTs. Trim your HSTs to 2 1/2" square. You should now have eight purple/orange HSTs that measure 2 1/2" square.

Arrange all of your HSTs the way they are supposed to look. This is another nine patch so we will number the pieces like a tic tac toe board again like we did in the other nine patch blocks that we did.

Flip square 2 RST onto square 3 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 3. Flip square 5 RST onto square 6 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 5. Flip square 8 RST onto square 9 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 9. Flip square 1 RST onto square 4 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 4.

Now flip square 7 RST onto square 4 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 4. Flip the 2/3 set RST onto the 5/6 set, nest the seams neatly and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward the 2/3 set. Flip the 8/9 set RST onto the 5/6 set, nest the seams neatly and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward the 8/9 set. Flip the 1/4/7 set RST on the 2/5/8 piece, nest the seams neatly and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press to one side and the first block is finished.

Next we will do Block # 71 - Puss in the Corner.

Cut two light green 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.
Cut two dark green 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.
Cut  four dark green 2" x 3 1/2" rectangle.
Cut one pink 3 1/2" 3 1/2" square.

Place one 2 1/2" light green square RST with one
2 1/2" dark green square. Repeat the process with the other light green/dark green 2 1/2" squares to make all of the squares into HSTs. Trim your HSTs to 2" square. You should now have four light green/dark green HSTs that measure 2" square.

Arrange all of your pieces the way they are supposed to look. While the pieces are not of an even size, this block is still a nine patch. I find it easier to keep seams well matched if I keep the number of long seams to a minimum but sometimes, as in a block like this, there is no avoiding it.

Flip square 1 RST onto rectangle 2 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 2. Flip rectangle 4 RST onto square 5 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 4. Flip square 7 RST onto rectangle 8 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 8. Flip square 3 RST onto the 1/2 set and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward square 2

Flip set 1/2 RST onto set 4/5 and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward the 1/2 set. Flip the 7/8 set RST onto the opposite side of the 4/5 set as previously sewn and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press toward 7/8 set.

Flip the last long narrow strip onto the larger piece and sew a 1/4" seam. Set the seam and press to one side and your second block for this week is finished!

.
That's our blocks for this week and we'll all be back next week. We will start doing blocks then that are not all centred around HSTs.

See you next week!

Tara
